So you might know there's a unit on the other side of that mountain, but you don't know what it is until you get closer. So your visual range is standard, while scanner range lets you detect some thing beyond sight range, but without specifics. You know have visual and scanner range. Of course, you also seem to be able to find techs of different sorts from exploration, so that makes it harder to tell until someone just has a lot of units from a specific tech in play. So unlike AoW3 you don't know someone's a Mage or Marshal at a glance, you'd have to see what units and abilities they use against you.

You don't actually know what secret tech a faction has until you see them use it. You get all your race's stuff, along with the tech tree for your secret tech.

You pick a race and a secret tech (sort of how AoW3 combined races and classes). So now you get a primary and secondary weapon along with three mods. Less slots, but seems to be more ability based. So you've got less individual cities and more focused power bases that basically control large territories (so the map isn't just flooded with countless cities). Each colony can then exploit neighboring sectors (you also can't place a colony in a sector next to one with a colony in it).

You colonize a sector (similar to how Endless Legend works) and get access to all that's in it. Cities aren't single expanding tiles anymore.
